• Agree on a rough season and city. Winter wedding in your hometown? Destination wedding? This single choice drives cost, guest count and vendors.
• Decide how you will make decisions. Who talks to which family? Who has the final say on what? Settling this early avoids most fights later.

Week 2: Set a realistic budget

• Find out what each side is willing to contribute, and what you can add yourselves.
• Keep a buffer of around 10% for surprises. There are always surprises.
• Split the budget into big buckets first: venue and food, outfits and jewellery, photos, decor, and everything else. Detailed line items can come later.

Week 3: Draft the first guest list

Your guest count affects almost every cost, so draft it early, even if it changes later.

• Ask each family for their list, split into "must invite", "should invite" and "nice to invite".
• Add your own friends and colleagues.
