Indian bride and groom holding hands - simple 3-tier Indian wedding budget planning

Indian Wedding Budget Planning: A Simple 3-Tier Plan That Actually Works

Whether your wedding budget is Rs. 10 lakh or Rs. 60 lakh, most couples run into the same problem: the money does not run out because the budget was too small, it runs out because it was never split properly. A lehenga upgrade here, an extra function there, and suddenly the decor has no money left.

Here is a simple way to plan your Indian wedding budget so every rupee has a job.

Step 1: Agree on one total number

Before you look at a single venue, agree on one total with everyone who is contributing. Write down who is paying for what. Keeping contribution separate from control (who pays vs who decides) avoids a lot of family tension later.

Step 2: Keep a 10% buffer aside

Take 10% off the top and do not touch it. Extra guests, last-minute travel, tips and forgotten items always appear. The buffer means they do not become debt.

Step 3: Split the rest into three tiers

Tier 1: Essentials (must happen)

  • Venue and catering (usually the biggest share of any Indian wedding)
  • Rituals: pandit, puja items, mandap
  • Wedding outfits for the couple
  • Photography

Tier 2: Experience (makes it special)

  • Decor and flowers
  • Music, DJ or sangeet choreography
  • Mehendi artist and makeup
  • Guest hospitality: rooms, transport, welcome kits

Tier 3: Extras (only if money is left)

  • Drone shots, extra photo booths, fireworks
  • Designer invitations and elaborate return gifts
  • Extra functions or theme upgrades

Fund Tier 1 fully first. Then Tier 2. Only then decide on Tier 3. This one rule stops most overspending.

Step 4: Don't forget the hidden costs

  • GST on vendor bills
  • Jewellery (often kept outside the main budget by families, but it still needs planning)
  • Alterations, tailoring and accessories
  • Tips for staff, drivers and helpers
  • Advance payments and cancellation charges

Step 5: Track every payment in one place

Most budgets fail in the tracking, not the planning. Note every quote, advance and balance due the day you agree to it. Compare the plan against actual spend every two weeks.

Plan your budget on paper, not in your head

The Indian Wedding Planner Box has dedicated budget worksheets, vendor comparison sheets and payment trackers designed around how Indian weddings are actually paid for. You can see at a glance what is booked, what is paid and what is still due.

If you are managing a large guest list, the Ultimate Wedding Guestlist spreadsheet also helps you keep catering and room counts (two of the biggest cost drivers) accurate.
